Trying to bully them into doing something doesn't help, even if what you're saying is true. I actually do. I suffered severe depression from age 13 to 17. The crippling, not-leaving-my-bed, contemplating-suicide depression you're referring to. I tried medications, therapy, everything. But you know what really helped me out of it? Two things. The first was reading about great, successful historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Gandhi, MLK Jr., etc. In almost every case they were a lot worse off than I've ever been and they decided to say "fuck this, I'm going to be awesome," AND THEN THEY FUCKING DID IT. Second was my grandfather, who, instead of being nurturing or sensitive because I was depressed, came in and pretty gave me a swift kick in the ass. Depression is a normal thing to experience, but you only lose if you let it ruin you as a person.

When it got REALLY bad for me i'd talk to my family and exercise, over time you get better at dealing with it if you make an effort.
