I'm trying to find more information about mandingo fighting in the antebellum South.
Was it like Roman gladiatorial combat? How many people would have participated and watched such a spectacle? Could the mandingos earn their freedom? Were they seen as heroes, much like sports stars are today? Were they seen as attractive to women?
I know that Roman gladiator sweat was sold as a beauty treatment, and that despite a prohibition on gladiator/citizen sexual relations, many rich women would have gladiator lovers, but what would the repercussions have been for a Southern society lady who had a mandingo lover?

The best of my knowledge there was no gladiatorial combat with the slaves they were too valuable to risk in such things. Besides that would be barbaric. Hell they preferred the have the Irish do the most dangerous work because if they died they just hired another much more expensive to buy a new slave or raise a new one from childhood.

Mandingo fighting didn't exist outside maybe one or two cases. The whole idea of the spectacle itself is to degrade the slaves into fighting one another like in a cock fight like they're animals, which in the cases of most slaves this wasn't how their masters treated them.

Typically, the decisive factor in rape cases would be other evidence. For example, drugs found on the defendant, circumstantial text messages, videos, witnesses (such as a neighbor who overheard screaming), medical examination of the prosecutor's body, etc.
Not only that, but you have to note that a very large amount of reported rapes (maybe as high as 10%) are thrown out by the police before even being investigated. Even less get actually get to the prosecution stage.
