Ir's pretty logical. Catholic and protestant landowners refuding to give up their feudal lands.
Pretty cool history, but it was a disaster for customs authorities.
There was a bar with a Belgian and a Dutch entry where a table was placed right on the border. The "smugglers" simply had a drink together and put the contraband on the bartable. Even today the Dutch side has sexshops while the Belgian shop has fireworkstores, with different laws being difficult to maintain.
