>Look on these two pictures — the life of the masses, one long, dull record of struggle and effort entirely devoted to the petty interests of personal welfare, to misery in all its forms, a life beset by intolerable boredom as soon as ever those aims are satisfied and the man is thrown back upon himself, whence he can be roused again to some sort of movement only by the wild fire of passion. On the other side you have a man endowed with a high degree of mental power, leading an existence rich in thought and full of life and meaning, occupied by worthy and interesting objects as soon as ever he is free to give himself to them, bearing in himself a source of the noblest pleasure.

Guys... it doesn't matter how intelligent you are if you are ALWAYS "free to give" yourself to your interests. You'll end up bored.

When did civilization go wrong? Industrial Revolution and the creation of the middle class?

Is there any solution for the average joe?

I don't see a problem, what do you think needs to be corrected?

The world is full of adult-age individuals who have not matured into functional adult humans.

What are you trying to say? What does GG have to do with mediocrity in society?
>>

Obsession with video games prevents one from growing as an individual.
>>
>>668574
Video games are as valid a form of media as books and movies. Do those prevent one from growing as an individual as well?
>>
>>668578
Only neckbeards say this. Very few video games even touch the level of entry level literature and art films.

What's with the Americans and their "embracing challenges" meme? It sounds extremely retarded.

Am I missing something? Is it something "ironic" (or whatever euphemism do you use "stupid shit" nowadays)?
>>
> do you use for*

Well I think OP is on the right track here. The mindset that people are born with all that matters in terms of intelligence is incorrect. There is a popular notion surrounding IQs and IQ tests thinking that these are actual indicators of 'intelligence'. Well fuck 'intelligence', what matters is your ability to explicate theories and your KNOWLEDGE. This you only gain by reading, and thus the picture posted is exactly correct.

>Video games are as valid a form of media as books and movies.

In theory, sure. In practice, most video games contain extremely repetitive tasks that do little for your brain except make it better at video games.
>>
>>668603

Yeah, people are so obsessed with their intelligence. But innate intelligence is just a starting point. How many jobs test your IQ? People care about what you can do, and what you have accomplished. The university system has produced a generation of young adults who all believe they are above average and therefore entitled to an easy life.

>falling for bait
people have always been that stupid
>>
>>668640
But there is a problem with that too, after all the only reason someone like George W. Bush was admitted into Harvard was because of connections and money. The education system is based on money, as early as primary education...

>>668578
guys, the point I think he was trying to make is "the obsession with video games" is the problem. Casual gaming or even normie gaming isn't a problem. Those 100+ hour RPG sandboxes keep you in the virtual world and away from the real one.
>>
> When did civilization go wrong?
Never? If you are bored you can do thousand of challenging things today like study into abstract mathematics for example. Everyone can do this should they at least try. If western civilization has a problem it would be in demographic and not with casual boredom of some man-children.

Is this a personality test?

This looks dumb

You missed the point entirely.

>occupied by worthy and interesting objects as soon as ever he is free to give himself to them, bearing in himself a source of the noblest pleasure.
>as soon as ever he is free to give himself to them
>free to give

Have you heard of "freeganism"? "NEETbux"? "Basic income allowance"?

The world is shifting towards one where most people have an abundance of "free time". So now, even people who are gifted in "mental power" end up falling into the "boredom" trap of the stupid.

The scale is shifted. When did it move?

> The world is shifting towards one where most people have an abundance of "free time"
It is nonsense because there is many fields where you need time to succeed that are pretty much important for progress of humanity. Free time is illusion. There is no pressure to do something but you will waste even by doing nothing anyway.

Why people who gifted in "mental power" would decide to be bored instead of doing something important with their free time? Is it motivational crisis or something else?

Do tell how shitposting on an anonymous peruvian basket weaving forum makes you grow as an individual.

Obsession? With Gaming?

KotakuinAction talks about games as much as /v/ talks about games.

Which means they're good as a news feed
