I think it really was a map in Halo CE.
Fascism had a huge effect on architecture, socialist realists and liberal bourgeoisie tried to emulate it while at the same time dancing around some key features essential to aesthetics. Some of their experiments were fun, I remember wandering around London when I was 14, seeing the millenium dome, museums, galleries and other bullshit, it was interesting, but none of the memories stuck, it never instilled in me the same passion that Adolf Hitler had for Vienna.
I think it was a huge mistake confusing art and tradition and aesthetics with symbols of imperialism, they were so desperate to avoid it they sacrificed creativity and inspiration, replacing it with randomness. Do they really think Japanese tourists traveling across Europe want to see ornate masterpieces alongside (and sometimes inside) cuck tower and wibbly wobbly things? Do they think common people want to be "challenged".
Of course the asian tigers didn't give a fuck, they went right ahead and built giant phallic unashamedly capitalist skyscrapers that have come to represent the modern world. If you want to go somewhere that makes you say "wow" and feel alive, go to Hong Kong.

Yeah, negatively. Things were decent in the late 20s and 30s but outside of there was fuck all money to build anything and then anything even vaguely associated with Nazism became DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD and as sort of a kneejerk reaction to that, aesthetics made a 360-degree turn and walked away from tradition.
Modern architecture looks like a stoned, drunk, clinically retarded and austistic abstract artist spilled his paint on accident and just went with the design. Fucking awful, I think roman styled architecture is way more pretty.
