I want someone to tell me about one period of american history in which they where not at war and how did this work out for them in economic terms. (20th-21st century)

I do this because I believe american economy is based on war, and that is why their government will start a war against anyone, even if it is against drug cartels or the islamic state.

I do not state this as a truth, I just want to find examples that might contradictorias what I think.

You could do something as breathtakingly radical as looking up some economic reports as to military production as a fraction of the entire GDP.
