Despite losing the election, Hitler was made Chanceller. Who did that and why?
>>
God, because He willed it.
>>
The old Chancellor, who was senile as fuck and figured that Hitler was a political lightweight, and it was better to keep anyone actually important from having the job.

Syndicats, Junkers, Generals.

I can't remember the guys name, but the previous chancellor seeing that Hitler was 'weak' and could be used to control the Nazis and their supporters put him in the cabinet.

Then after a while, something bad happened (again can't remember why), the old guy resigned and Hindenburg replaced him with Hitler.

Chronic extreme political instability.

Hindenburg. Oh. The humanity.

Franz von Papen who thought Hitler and the nazis could be controlled. Together with Hindenburg he and his nationalist party joined forces with the nazis to form a majority government. The alternative was letting the social democrats rule - which nobody wanted (except the social democrats).

Hitler did win the election though, but not with an overall majority, though with more seats and votes than any other single party

The issue was he refused to enter any coalition without being made Chancellor, and any other coalition that would agree to form wouldn't be large enough.

Franz von Papen (original Chancellor) wanted Hindenburg to continue to rule by decree, but eventually Hindenburg gave in and allowed Hitler to form a cabinet as Chancellor, Papen eventually agreed, being made vice chancellor (with Goring) thinking he could influence Hitler

In 1932 the far right (NSDAP+DNVP) was close to a majority and since the KPD refused to join a republican coalition with the democratic parties no majority was possible so a caretaker Chancellor was appointed. In 1933 the far right got a majority and Hitler became Chancellor.
>>
Politics in Weimar Germany were kinda fucked.
Like the others mentioned some people thought hitler could be controlled.
Also worth mentioning is that he was denied becoming the chancellor more than once.
