Not recent, but in ancient Hindu kingdoms warfare was carried out exclusively by the Warrior castes, and battles would occur a few hundred metres from a field where farmers were tending their crops, because the Vaishya class farmers knew that they were not a part of this, as did the warriors: the Kshatria.
At some times in Japan during their earlier history warfare may have been exclusively carried out by Samurai as a highly ritualised event exclusively participated in by warriors.
