Allende was transforming Chile into another communist shithole, while arming the 10.000 strong "Revolutionary Left Movement" to take power when shit hit the fan.

Pinochet prevented that, and destroyed this 10.000 strong paramilitary by killing only 3.000 people and exiling the others, in an example of restraint. He, unlike most dictators, also knew he wasn't infallible, so he delegated a lot of power to people who knew better, such as Jaime Guzman in internal politics and the Chicago Boys in economics.

Later, he would grant his own country a democratic constitution and make a referendum asking the people if they wanted him to keep in power, and when they said no, he actually stepped down!

Considering all that, his reputation as South American Hitler is totally undeserved. Really, if you want to hate Latin American right-wing dictators, hate Jorge Videla or Efraín Ríos Montt, but Pinochet? He didn't do nothing wrong.
