Does anyone know any good books on Japan from the Meiji restoration up to the 1930s, with a major focus on the political history, how did the dynamic of political control change throughout that period, with the military holding a huge degree of power over the nation by the 1930s, something that seems to have been questioned very little.

Feel free to request anything you're interested in too

I'm not sure how it is covered since I only read one volume so far, but you could try to read The Cambridge History of Japan. It's a total of 6 volumes of a detailed analysis.

this. 5 and 6 cover your period of interest. and they do a great job of explaining political developments.

Would it be recommended to tackle the others first, or could I just jump straight in

The rapid industrialisation and modernisation of Japan has always been of great interest, how the country made the jump from a system resembling feudalism in nature to a new system more closely resembling the nations of Europe, the political developments relating to this, what sort of system was establishing following the Boshin war, and how it gradually changed to what existed by the post-WWI period, will I feel out of place due to lack of ancient Japanese knowledge, or is it fine to just jump in with volumes 5 and 6, they seem perfect covering the 19th and 20th centuries
>>
>>519047
no you can jump straight in. Volume 5. is on the nineteenth century and so will go over the transitional period from "feudal" to "modern" politically, militarily etc. etc. You don't have to know ancient japanese history. Its like wondering whether you need to know about 17th century England to understand the American Civil War. Also, you don't necessarily have to read the whole of each book either, just the parts that interest you if you the works too long (which also means they're comprehensive as well and will most likely answer many of you questions on the period)

If I remember correctly, there's a Japanese book titled in Japanese, but it translates to "I am a cat", and it was something along the lines of either a satire of Japanese culture and politics or outright criticism through the eyes of a pet housecat. Go ahead and google it to find it. Published I think 1905. Not sure how long it was, but if you wanted an inside look, there you go.

Frederick Dickinson wrote two books that might help answer your question:

War and National Reinvention: Japan in the Great War, 1914 - 1919
World War I and the Triumph of a New Japan, 1919-1930

I'm looking for books that explore marriage and sex throughout history in a non meme-ish way. Everything from planned/political marriages, adultery, incest to keep bloodlines pure ect.

Im reading Samurai Revolution by Romulus Hillsborough at the moment, really enjoying it so far. It deals with the last Tokugawa shogunate & the Meiji restoration. Its pretty new, first published in 2014, so Im not sure how great it is, but it has strong reviews so far.

finally, check the very bottom of this google doc:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Rq0gUUpoI1Xi_NKpt7iuUdU2xdQzbwSu-g2BzpG_JBc/edit?pref=2&pli=1
and you'll find a list of bibliographic articles listed that I didn't mention here. Many of them will have sections on gender or marriage. good luck
