Post your favorite historical films (doesn't need to be a war film)
Not enough anarchist films these days
>>482279
>anarchist
>POUM
>>482221
Burnt by the Sun.
>>482292
Put yourself in their shoes. Anarchists and Communists troups were almost alike in the early days of the revolution, even Orwell was fighting with the POUM because he only understood the distinction after the commie betrayal
>>482320
Well IIRC the POUM line was superior to the FAI / CNT-leadership lines. Neither of whom were the soviet-aligned communists.
GOAT protagonist
As relevant today as it ever was...

>>482327
Communists will always be more organised then Anarchists.
>>482358
Anarchists make better bureaucrats.
The CNT/FAI were better organised than the POUM.
>>482340
>progressivism
>renaissance propaganda
It's trash
>>482304
This probably - epic film.
Might even benefit from a gory remake.
Dodeskadan
One of the most absolutely gorgeous films I've ever seen.
>>482528
Based on a novel. The novel being nostalgic.
Apocalypse Now is the GOAT war movie.
This is an objective fact.
>>482616
Too romantic but at least it isn't Tommies.
>>482616
This. 100 % this.
Recently saw Цapь. A bit muddled in terms of plot and historicity, but the themes are nice and its really gorgeously shot
>>482616
great movie
>>482624
Is that you Jerry?
>>482314
god tier
city of life and death
a Chinese art house war movie about Nanking
>inb4 chinese war movies = propaganda
this is one of the few that isn't, in fact the chinese didn't take to it immediately because it was sympathetic to Japanese.
this whole movie used to be on youtube with subtitles but now I can only find the nonsubbed version
>>482221
This isn't particularly my favorite film but can anyone shed some light as why this movie seems to be adored among history buffs? I have watched this many times and I just don't understand the charm of it.

Brest Fortress

Hard to be a God

God damn she was hot in that movie.
So, I recently watched Иди и cмoтpи (Some and See). How historically accurate is it?
SPOILERS ahead, though I don't think the experience of this film can be "spoiled" by plot.
I really fucking enjoyed it (once I got past the staring contest in the first half).
It was tense, the plight felt real. The nazis attitudes were exagerated, but not cartoonish, and actually added some emotional dimension to the plot (which is a rare for enemies in war films).
Being a Soviet film I half expected a triumphalist attitude, a "Yes, we could!" bittersweet ending with a decisive partisan victory, but the closing note was perfect, one of "the struggle goes on, we keep losing, you only survived to see the next horror".
Who Atonement here?

And Boardwalk Empire?
>>485703
>Some and See
It's probably very accurate. There are many reports of similar events taking place in the Eastern Front.
>>486113
sorry, Some and Cee
>>486135
Damn lysdexia eh?
>>482221
the holocaust never happened
>>483122
It's funny, i had the opposed reaction to the film. I really like Spielberg, but he never really explores the sources of war, he only shows the result of it. The American civil war was a complex conflict, motivated but a lot more causes then slavery. After leaving the theater, i felt like the film only existed to glorified Lincoln.

The CNT wasn't disorganised at all, it actually increased production a lot when it took control of the economy. The problem was the militia system. The level of military organisation was far behind the political and economic organisation because the CNT didn't have militias until the civil war. There were some militant affinity groups like Nosotros, but they were small and not fit to take on a conventional army. That was the biggest and most glaring flaw with Syndicalism; a union can't protect itself to the extent that it needs to, especially compared to its influence and this problem was what led to the CNT's downfall. It was practically defenceless against the reactionaries.
>>487794
>a union can't
Bullshit. The CNT was too slow in organising the principles of WDC
>>487805
What does WDC stand for?
>>487822
Workers Defence Committees
>>482528
I went into it thinking it would be Kubrick's boring film but godamn did I love every second of it
>Haing S. Ngor had to flee the set after re-enacting the harrowing scene where he is faced down by a female teenage soldier as it evoked too many horrific memories of his time spent living under the Khmer Rouge regime.
ballad of a soldier
>>485703
>odin just chilling out on the right
spectacular Soviet propaganda, powerful as fuck, would watch again.
>>485703
Idi i smotri is way too upbeat.

Fucking great movie.
>>489743
Love the soundtrack.
>>482616

>>484736
Thanks rusbro, The Cranes Are Flying is a fucking great Soviet WWII movie that's fucking heartbreaking and extremely tragic
>>482221

Monty Phython's: The Meaning of Life?
>>487794
>not fit to take on a conventional army
This is the greatest failure of similar movements. To properly go against a conventional army you need conventional discipline and conventional knowledge of tactics. If you're going to attempt a proper confrontation and a eventual guerrilla you need this. Spanish anarchist disregarded basic tenets like respect for superiors and rifle drills, and the consequences are know.

TEUTONS GET OUT
>>489775
link?
This obviously
>>482479
Good choice.
I personally like Turner for it's attention to detail. The setting is perfect.
>>489775
Did anyone else notice it wasn't screened this year on TV? It's always shown around this time.
I wonder if it's considered too "offensive" to show now.
>>498515
This movie is complete dog shit.
>>500688
Nice bump but next time suggest something.
Movie posters are a lost art, such amazing and evocative art. Now it's just glossy actor pics
>>500723
I agree but they're much cheaper. I also miss the lost art of hand painted movie billboards.
>Alexander Nevski
>Andrei Rublev
>Aguirre: Wrath of God
>El espiritu de la colmena (not really historical but I like the setting)
>Not really "historical" either, but Pasolini's Arabian Nights
I know Im going to get shit, but Schinlders List was a pretty great movie and I think the criticism that people sometimes throw at it for being "too happy" is fucking bullshit
