As I get older the more fucked up the whole commissar thing was. These were a bunch of 23-26 year olds radicalized by communist and executing their fellowman. Idk the older I get the more fucked up war seems. It blow mys mind when I hear about how young guys had a bunch of men under their command. I guess when I was younger I always assume all the officers to be 40-50. It was only when I reached 18 and realized I shared the same age as some of these war heroes, did things began to seem crazy.

This meme needs to stop. Political officers in the Army weren't even from the NKVD and were abolished below regimental level by 1943
Before that they didn't even do le ebin summary executions all that much, they were there to enforce ideological loyalty and lead by example. This famous pic was of a political officer who stood up to rally his men and was shot moments after. Many were bullies but then again so were many regular officers.
It was the NKVD who committed atrocities, and even they had a small care of guys who did this as most soldiers were just volunteers or select conscripts who believed in the system more. To add complications was that the NKVD technically controlled the railways, border guards, fire departments and civilian police so any nominally NKVD unit was often made up of as many regular dudes as political die hards
Something else to note: the average Soviet citizen believed in communism and socialism. As the war progressed these became matters of national pride as much as anything else. It's hard for us to consider but is an historical fact. You'd be just as likely to get your ass kicked for talking shit about Stalin by your buddy Igor as by the NKVD
