Was there always unrest inbetween the ethnicities historically, or is it a new phenomenon?
>>

they lived in ethnic enclaves during the days of the ottoman empire and the ottomans designed their own provinces to kind of separate various peoples as well as they could

Syria as in current-border Syra was almost literally drawn on a map in closed rooms many hundreds of miles away so of course there'd be a fuckton of unrest from the get-go

Why are the Assads the rulling dynasty?
>>
>>478195
The Assad clan is Alawi, a religous minority that controls the east coast. When France was trying to colonize Syria the main threat to their holdings was Pan-Arab nationalism so they tried to separate minority support with preferential treatment and kickbacks. When Syria became its own country the officer core was made up of Alawites which supported Hafiz al-Asad's military coup in the 1970's

The Ottomans didn't give a fuck about ethnicity and their borders were arbitrary as hell. It's an entirely western logic and the French knew very well what they were doing.

And the allegedly good Ottoman borders, which is really an inconsiderate version of France's

This map more closely resembles the current division seen in OP's map, with Aleppo rebelling against everything from Hama to Damascus, and ISIS holding together the eastern river valley.

That's just a coincidence. The civil war is a farce anyway, or if you want to be naive, ideological, not an authentic struggle based on ethnic nationalism.

If you look closely the difference is only that the French divided it into even smaller pieces and paid attention to the ethnic groups (Alawites, Christians/Lebanon, Druze, two Sunni Arab states) which by your logic should cause less problems, no?

It wasn't as sectarian as it's today, but it wasn't a peacefull coexistence either. Let's remind that a bloody war between the Druze and the Maronites in the syrian province of the Otoman Empire led to the first humanitarian intervention in the history

Elves are spreading, Orcs are recessing, but the Trolls are still keeping their own, supported by the Chaos Acolytes in the south as it seems. King Bashar still fighting the war.

I wonder how the guys at Deir-ez Zor held out.
They've been cut from the main government since 2013.
