You're pretty wrong there, those technological advances require large, powerful (this does not mean undemocratic) centralized societies both to put the people and resources needed to create them in one place, but also to transfer them and the knowledge of how they work and are made to the population at large (sometimes literally "muh roads"). As for the "organic" social ties you espouse, while they do have benefits and will always be somewhat necessary to human society are harmful at middle ages' levels where name and clan trumped ability. While nepotism and tribalism still exists it is immeasurably less prevalent, which is a very good thing.
