John III Doukas Vatatzes is the most underrated Byzantine Emperor. He beat the Franks along with his Epiriote competitors, established his rule over Minor Asia and the Balkans and Nicea also enjoyed prosperity under his rule. If only the following Emperors were as competent as him then there Empire would've had a longer lifespan.

John II Komnenos or his son Manuel. After them it all went down hill.

I only recently started having an interest in Byzantine history, can anyone give me a short summary of notable, emperors, periods and battles/important events so i can know what to focus on when i start learning more. Im not a complete begginer, i know about Constanrine xi, the komnenian restoration and some important events that ive picked up. But very superficially.
