Is there any book that covers the history of Russia? From the czars to the cold war, all those countries affected by the revolution and communism, specially Romania and Czech Republic. Also episodes like Holodomor and Nikolai Yezhov.

I'd appreciate any recommendations, thanks.

You'll have better luck finding books in Russians that deny the Holodomor.

Also about that, what is the general opinion of this board about the holodomor? Is it a touchy subject like the holocaust? I'm fairly new here, so sorry for the ignorance.

I never saw threads about the Holodomor. It's obviously less marketed in world, so people feel less inclined to talk about it or deny it.

I met Russians who would often scoff at it and call it Ukrainian lies.

All associated with communist ideologies, for sure?

Partially, but some just didn't like Ukrainians.

>history of Russia
>post Bolsheviks

Russia died when the reds took over and began raping Eastern European culture.

Do you really think that? Do you think atheism was a strong influence or just a tool for the propaganda?

Also, how would you define Eastern European culture? Is there some artistic movement that represents it? I'm thinking about the film Stalker, and it's context in this topic.

Now, I'm not sure how accurate this book is, as I'm not an expert on Russian history, and I never finished it, but there didn't seem to be any glaring mistakes. I never got to the section on Bolshevism and post-WW2 Soviet Union, so I'm not sure if the author gets opinionated or if he covers other Warsaw Pact countries. He seemed to have done a good job covering everything up to Ivan IV, though.

contains books on Russian foreign policy throughout history

cambridge histories of Russia also cover Russian history in its totality, but each of its three volumes is like 800 pages each. They're on bookzz.org, as are a lot of free books

It wasn't "atheism" itself. It was the replacement of bourgeoisie culture with socialist state ideology.

Aside from spaceflight, the AK47 and Tetris, there's not been many noteworthy cultural advancements to come out of Eastern Europe in the last century.
>>
No, there are no books that cover the history of Russia. A bit of a big oversight within historiography, but what can you do.

>Is it a touchy subject like the holocaust?
As far as the board goes, it's certainly not as touchy though we've got some staunch deniers who are strikingly similar to the ones with Holocaust.

Robert Conquest basically covered anything necessary on it. Timothy Snyder is fine too.

It's mostly to do with staunch Russian hatred of anything Ukrainian. There's a saying that got attributed to people to all kinds of people from Kerensky to Vynnychenko that goes: "Russian liberal ends where Ukrainian question begins".

>Also about that, what is the general opinion of this board about the holodomor?
People really need to read the last 20 years of peer reviewed material.

>Is it a touchy subject like the holocaust? I'm fairly new here, so sorry for the ignorance.
Not at all. The word "holodomor" is a nationalist invention. The actual Soviet Famine of 32-33 was horrific, preventable (policy level regarding agriculture, not preventable as in "withheld water supply"), ameliorable, amelioration was attempted, but failed, and that failure was a policy failure.

Though we should also blame the urban Ukrainians for stealing the relief food out of the mouthes of the villagers.

>Robert Conquest
Is pre-archival. There were loads of archivals findings including the PC's intentionality (they didn't want the famine, they were horrified, they started food relief immediately, they didn't care that they removed the local ameliorations or that the relief was ineffective).

Notice how we only ever talk about the Ukraine SSR during the 32-33 famine?
