There was no Russia at the time, just bunch of tribes who recently settled the land from the west. Vikings were traders who was interested in the trade routes south to Islamic world and the ERE, so they explored the rivers and established some trade post to trade furs with the natives. The monies they get from trading and raiding allowed them to equip and support relatively strong military force for this poor region, so they eventually became the major political power.
There are not sources on "conquering" though, the tradition says they were invited by a confederation of Slavic, Finish and Baltic tribes to rule, to stop infighting and bring some order. The tribes themselves prospered by being finally connected to the world market. In the end, scandinavians has been assimilated by 1000.
