NJ here. Only the cities in NJ are shit. They became shit in the 1970's when manufacturing starting going to shit. A white flight to the suburbs ensued. NJ suburbs and anywhere that isn't a city are actually quite nice. Some cities are starting to improve again, mostly places like Hoboken(very nice now) Newark and Jersey City (both not quite good yet but are getting there), these cities benefit from being just outside NYC but don't suffer from NYC's astronomically high cost of living, so many are choosing to live in Jersey for half the cost.
