>>Implying the Christianity didn't destroy the identity of the Roman empire

The Roman identity was ruined way before Christianity. The Romans of the time when Christianity was accepted were far different from the Romans of the Republic. The Romans didn't worship the Roman gods when Christianity was divided, the Romans were divided in belief of a billion cults.

>>Implying that they weren't dominated by dozens of others pagan populations

All empires rise and fall. Those pagan populations converted to Christianity and tried to copy everything Roman.

Victorians didn't like the idea that the west has no claim to to the legacy of rome, and that the eastern empire did.

So they renamed it.
>>
>>461401
Wasn't Byzantium predominantly Greek? Sure they were Roman citizens, but they weren't ethnically, linguistically, or entirely culturally the same as the Romans in the west. I think perhaps calling it some variation of "the Greek empire" would be more accurate.
>>
>>464870
There were no such thing as unified Roman ethnicity or culture, Latin-speaking people in the west were ethnically and culturally diverse - Latins, other Italics, Etruscians, Celts, Iberians and many others. "Romans" from the very beginning was a legal term, meaning citizens of the city, and since 3rd century every free man in the Empire was a citizen. So Greek-speaking people on the east were right to call themselves Romans and their empire Roman Empire.
>>
>>464870
Roman culture was an imitation of Greek culture, friend.
>>
>doesn't speak Latin
>doesn't follow Roman Catholicism
>doesn't control Rome

The Byzantine Empire is Hellenism + Romanism + Oriental Despotism. If you call it Roman, you might as well as call the Ottoman or Russian empires "Roman".

Because the Byzantium was the melding of Roman and Greek culture. It makes sense.

Probably because the"Roman Empire" was centered around the city of Rome, so the empire that was centered around the city of Byzantium gets called the "Byzantine Empire"

People get really autistic about the name ROMAN Empire when even the late western empire had moved its capital to Ravenna.
>>
>>466342
And before that it was Milan, and before - Trier. IIRC during 4th century a Roman Emperor visited Rome itself only once or twice, Rome has been irrelevant since 3rd century.

I prefer to call it that as a Greek. The Romans already get too much credit and trying to maintain the legacy of your subjugators is pure cuckoldry.

Then again pretending to be something you're not is an Anatolian tradition.

Okay, I think I've come up with a good compromise that could please everybody.

The Greeks of the empire were not ethnic Romans from the city of the Rome.
But their state was the Roman Empire, and therefore their nationality was Roman.

Sound good? Can we all agree to this?

Shut. The. Fuck. Up.

The WESTERN empire fucking moved the capital out of rome, and kept it out of it.

Rome was irrelevant to the empire outside of sentimental value for several centuries, being a fucking pit of angry proles who did nothing but riot and demand free shit.

>MUH LANGUAGE
Except they kept using latin in a n official capacity long after the wealth fell.

And on top of this, if you put an early imperial roman next to a roman kingdom era roman-they would have serious trouble understanding each other.

On top of this, the late empire had the antiquarian movement, where educated nobles REFUSED to use any word that wouldn't have been known to a Persian war era Athenian.

>>466541
>Lose all territory left of the adriatic including heartland and namesake
The east was the heartland of the empire, you fucking moron. It was far more prosperous and worthwhile to control, which is a huge part of the east surviving at all.

>Adopt new culture
Name for themselves?
Romans.

Name people called their land?
Land of the romans.

>Still the same state
When literally all of your laws, bureaucracy, and administration descend directly from a state, and you're in territory owned by it, using the same legal code, taxing the same people, with an ar,y that was raised by it...
Yeah, you're that state.

Unless you're going to tell me 1800s America and 2015 America are different states, because the culture is sure as fuck different.

I honestly don't mind Byzantine because most educated people are aware it was the "Roman" Empire and we just call it Byzantine for convenience.

Plus there's something so grand and majestic about the word "Byzantine."

the identity "Roman" can't be measured in terms of language or nationality because it was tied to neither.

Roman was an identity defined by citizenship. During Rome's conquests, their conquered subjects still continued to speak their respective languages with Latin being used as the primary language of government and inter-provincial communication. Roman citizens in Judea still spoke Hebrew, citizens in Macedonia and Byzantium still spoke Greek, and so on. An effort to convert the everyday language of everyone in the empire would be too much for what Rome was capable of at the time, and was generally just fine with citizens speaking their local tongues, as long as state documents and other trade/government related communication was done in Latin.

Since the state government and framework was that of the Roman Empire, the people still identified themselves as "Roman" because that was the title of their citizenship, even with the capital in Constantinople, Ravenna, Milan, and elsewhere.

There is no ethnic or linguistic Roman, just the title of a citizen of Rome.

While the guy who blames Christianity goes to far, it did passively cause the fall of the Roman empire. The men of talent who used to pursue public office instead went into the priesthood leaving those posts to either the corrupt or incompetent.
