They were probably some Gnostic sect of Judaism because IF they were the same doctrine the Jews wouldn't have killed Jesus and His Apostles and Christians wouldn't be so controversial to Judaism.

Also if the Romans never "converted" to Christianity, the OT and NT would be different religions essentially because one is for Yahweh and the other for Christ (some OT would go to NT) but the Romans put both of them together and any thing in opposition would be part of its inquisition which was not at all done by real Christians
