Is this film an accurate depiction of the Qin dynasty? I know the sword fighting is extremely realistic, but what about the buildings, outfits, weapons etc.?

Qin was shit.

Song and Ming is where it's at.

Why?

They pushed some good economic reforms and generally made live more bearable.
>>
>>395376
Just because Europe was more interesting during that period, t b h. The Mings just spent their time fortifying and rebuilding until they got their shit fucked up by trade and natural causes.
>>
>>395390
I'm looking at it from a purely Chinese perspective. A perspective that seems pretty bleak for large parts of history.
>>
>>395404
The Song dynasty was practically the worlds greatest country at the time. The Qin dynasty lasted for like 10 years but at least they built that fucking wall.

and then there's the HUGE population that they've maintained for so long. But other than that I agree that Chinese history isn't very interesting.
I'm not a historian though.
Song was the Chinese high water mark. It went to shit after that desu senpai, relatively anyways, still top dogs in Asia.

Ancient China in Chinese films is always so advanced looking.

While it looks cool and I know little of asian history I'm kind of doubting it's true to life.

The architecture is pretty accurate.
Pic related, a model of a building from the Han dynasty (dynasty right after Qin), constructed based on wall engravings and excavated ruins.

The outfits are roughly accurate, they give a nice rough image of what the period looks like although they miss a lot of details.

As for the weapons, dagger axe and crossbow were indeed the most commonly used weapons in the Qin army. And the efficiency of those weapons contributed to Qin's rapid conquest of the other states.

Based on your picture it looks more like Han than Qin architecture, but seeing as they're so close together I think it can be excused as artistic license.

It depends heavily on the director.

Some directors go full MUH ARTISTIC LIBERTY

Some directors actually bother to do their homework and study up on the historical period they portray.

Pic related, a pretty accurate depiction of clothing and armour in the Ming dynasty in this movie.

Treasure Ships of 600 feet length, myth or reality?

I think the still impressive 450 feet estimate is more realistic. Sucks that they're not ocean going vessels and Zheng He most probably couldn't take the giant ones on his voyage.
>>
What are historically accurate Chinese movies? Especially those that have accurate costumes and sets.
>>
>>395806
They sailed around shallow waters, and the ships were built that big to carry livestock and vegetation.

The shipyards in Jiangsu and Fujian have excavated huge planks which would have been a part of the ships.

Pic related is probably a bit more realistic.

Once you get beyond the 100 meter wooden keels will start to buckle and hog.

>>395867
Part of me thinks the 600 feet might be overestimate from the Chinese nationalist.

Part me of thinks the underestimation might be from the European nationalists who don't want to believe China was great.
>>
>>395896
Bit of both, initially Europeans just took everything Chinese scholars said at face value. However some folks remained skeptical.

Here is a decent read on wooden ship length.

Nah they were probably 450ft long at most. Still impressive though

So I've heard there's some point in time in China when there was basically no technologically progression and the political players where fairly conservative to keep everything stable.

Anyone know what I'm on about? Want to share how and why technological progression more or less just stopped?

大明王朝1566 was called the House of Cards of China when I heard and some even claimed that comparing it to HOC is insulting.
Haven't watched tho since I can't find it with good resolution.

It's got a pretty low budget and it's an older series unfortunately

A shame they don't make more dramas about the Ming dynasty

China essentially stopped inventing anything after the 1300s. In the 1300s they invented the multi-stage rocket, naval mine, and fragment bomb.

In the 1400s? Nothing of importance. After the treasure ships were decommissioned China just stopped inventing and exploring. Sad

China had technologies, but not science.
The scholars lived in a paralleled world from the mostly illiterate artisans, who passed technologies on through face-to-face teaching without any former organizations of them.

What is it with Chinese government officials and goofy hats? There are like 50 different hats in every documentary/movie about medieval China.

Funny one:
This hat was invented by the first emperor of the Song dynasty when he felt annoyed by the officials talking to each other during court time.
>>
>>396410
For some reasons modern film makers brought their detest of the fashion of hats to the historical films and shows. I can't recall much medieval European or sengoku Japanese films with characters wearing anything other than helmet and crown. Chinese films are better since they can't ignore the fact that almost everyone wore hats at least during the Tang and Song dynasty, but they rarely come close to be accurate.
