Most SS members were recruited based on time served in the party. Those who were loyal to the Party during the 1920's/early 30's where top picks for their loyalty even when the party wasn't even close to taking power.
Beyond that, they go through advanced physical training and other such tests typical for a nation's honor guard, and I'm sure there was thorough screening to test each member's dedication to the crimes they were committing, to make sure that the more morally reprehensible actions would still be performed by these men.
There was a height requirement ranging from 1.72m-1.78m depending on which branch of the SS you wanted to join. Eventually these were greatly reduced as the Nazis got desperate, though.
