Skorzeny survived and became a legend after a F.E.E Yeo-Thomas testified on his behalf. Later on he got spinal cancer and was paralyzed. He taught himself to walk again.

Yes, they were ineffective quite often. A lot of units collapsed especially fighting in the west, but in the east and when mixed in with whatever was left of the Wehrmacht, Old German men who were vets of the first war as well as the audacity of youth, the Volksstrum units could be quite tenacious.
The fact that they used every weapon they could find right down to raiding museums for old military rifles and crossbows is neat as fuck.

Many of the Prussian Junker types were raised in a culture of not being politically affiliated so that they would serve only the state and people. Many non Prussian generals also adopted these practices, especially if these men served before the Nazis. It was why that prior to the the July 20th plot, they were not held to do things like the Nazi salute. Men like Keitel and to a lesser extent Jodl were ridiculed by their comrades for playing Nazi politics more then the average comparatively ranked officers and as a result they benefited greatly from it.
That's not to wipe clean everyone in the OKW or OKH. Hitler gave monetary awards to many officers in an attempt to buy their loyalty and cause disruption in the ranks. Gerd von Rundstedt alone received a 250,000 Reichmark check which everyone thought he cashed until his son's children produced the uncashed check in the 1970's or 80's
