They were not homosexuals in the modern sense. And the male relationship was a form of generational bonding through those acts.

They had wives and children even though they participated in the acts. It was unthinkable for an Ancient Greek man to fully immerse himself in homosexuality without appearing morally questionable.

Same with the Romans too. But Roman were more concerned about being alpha than the Greeks. If you ever had been known to have been a sub (aka sucking or taking a dick) you were permanently tainted. Roman culture was pretty sexually puritanical but along different lines than Judeo-Christian morals.

>the church was the center of science and technology
Yes, this was true, but that's only because they appropriated it away from being secular. You had lonely celibate monks performing science instead of heirs to estates. You could not do any large construction project without it being Church related. It's exactly the same as what the Church did to pagan traditions, adopt them only to be able to control them and limit them. One could hardly say these institutions thrived under the yoke of the Church.
>>
A lot of people I know hold it that the thinkers of the early modern era were backwards and evil, largely based off of the single point of slavery being a thing at the time and irrespective of whatever specific thinkers had to say about it.

It's frustrating trying to explain the Enlightenment and what's all going on around that when the person on the other side has already categorized everything they're hearing as antiquated and barbaric compared to whatever sort of not-movement post-modern philosophies can be distilled into. Those guys had a lot of smarts behind what they were arguing for, both in favor of and against the ideas of the country I live in.

Another one is
>the US was the champion of both world wars
which so often seems to disrespect the Russian contribution in WWII and how much of a share the other Entente nations really put up in WWI.

It's almost always used in conversation to justify the U.S. acting unilaterally or to add clout to the idea that the U.S. is a big-stage moral actor in politics. This follows the assertion that politics are about morals and identity and usually a suggestion of bombing 'those sumbitches in the Middle East. Not the Jews.'

Half the old Saints are based on pagan legends or deities, and half the holidays are based on pagan festivals. Are you really this unfamiliar with Christianity?

Just because the Church took them in does not mean they supported them. It means they did it for pragmatic reasons and it was more practical to appropriate.
>>
>>367454
Ah, I see what you're saying now.
I agree to an extent. Yes, it was only for pragmatic reasons, but to say that the church was vehemently "anti-science" is just wrong. It seems to me that there was quite the conscious effort within the church to preserve our knowledge. Whereas, I see the pagan celebrations thing as more of a concession rather than a conscious decision.

Preserve is different than advance. The Church became the center of many things because that's how it could control things, by Christianizing them.
>>
>>367287

No, no, no.

The issue with Galileo is that he had a personal disagreement with certain members of the church. The fact that they used their powers to destroy him for this rather than for challenging their cosmology does not make them better.

>>

Connections like that are leads rather than conclusions.

Two similar words for the same thing in two different places? First find out if one introduced the thing to the other place, and go on from there.

We found that the indoeuropean basal religion really was the basis for a panoply of pantheons, as well as the indoeuropean basal language for billions of modern day speakers.

But pyramids are everywhere because of geometry, not direct contact. The same reason doors are about 2 meters high.

I'll bite. The loss of the 6th Army meant the end of Germany having a free hand in Russia. Events elsewhere in North Africa and later over the skies of Germany started taking affect later in 1943 but the loss of Stalingrad was the critical blow that resulted in the entire Eastern Front being fucked.

>"muh Kharkov and Kursk stabilized da lines"

Debatable. The strategic advantage was with the Soviets no matter how you slice it. German strength in the east was never going to be able to overcome a fast mobilizing Red Army, not when the Germans were fucked in every dimension - transport, weaponry, fuel, ammo and armor. The appearance of the lines being stable in '43 was just a result of the Soviets taking a break from the winter offensive - they were waiting for the Germans to make the first move before striking. Furthermore, there was no great attempt at recovering unit strength post-Stalingrad. Units from quieter sections of the Eastern Front were shifted around in shrinking musical chairs while the other half of the German Army waited on the Atlantic Wall.

> "muh Soviets used human waves/Zerg rush tactics"

This fucking meme of human waves needs to die.
The Soviet Army of 1943 was holistically different than the shitty army of 1941. Spamming infantry after you already lost 2 million in '41 alone is fucking stupid which is why they stopped doing that. The Soviets absolutely had more manpower than the Germans by this time and would use it against broad sections of the entire front, giving the impression of human waves versus the poorly manned German fronts. Strategically and tactically they were far better organized and led on the attack, having very detailed assignments for each unit and objectives deep behind German lines. The Soviets would dump gigatons of shells and rockets on a position before sending in infantry and tanks.

Only Wehraboos think losing every single battle is OK if you got a good K/D ratio out of it. WW2 is not a fucking video game.

This is something that most people haven't understand it yet. You always hear "He/she speaks creole", I mean what kind of creole? Do you think the creole from Cape Verde is the same as the creole from Haiti?

>Creole is not ONE language.
>>
>>367724

Um-hum. But the manorial system (and others) wasn't the same thing as the feudal system (rather the series of parochial arrangements that was later rationalized and codified as the feudal system).

The irrational strategy works if your dealing with mainly rational actors. Peasants and merchants were trying to get on with the rational business of making stuff and getting it places, so you could irrationally offer to fight them to the death for it, and they'd have to rationally offer to give you it. /anarchist

>>367776

They did, it was a war-crime. Is it a war-crime to shoot a whole village? Why isn't a war-crime to kill a village worth of people in a city with bombs?

I think this is actually why he's my favorite president.

Responding to the north Korean press into southern vietnam without bombing china is my favorite decision of his.

Then again my knowledge of history is limited, and i'm looking into asiatic history now.

FDR basically handed the Soviets half of Europe. Putting his personal friendship with Stalin above American strategic interests was the real tragedy of American diplomacy
>>

Why is Slaughterhouse 5 reddit-tier?
How the fuck can you not like it?
>>
>>368836
The USSR's entire war effort hinged on American supplies. The vehicles, train cars, and boots that they were sent were the only thing that allowed them to maintain supply lines without which they would have been utterly fucked against the Germans. The Allied war effort in Europe had no hope without American material support or Russian manpower, it's dumb to give either side more credit than the other.
>>
>>368971
I haven't a clue what you're on about, but I distinctly remember there being something in slaughterhouse 5 about the aliens saying that there were 4 genders
>>
>>367521

No, that's fine. Comparative mythology is fine when you use similarities to look for when and how the similarities might have arisen, and you're absolutely correct in saying that indoeuropean religion is the basis for many pantheons.

My complaint is when people skip the investigation step entirely and jump straight to accusations of A is copied directly from B.

>There were fives sexes on Tralfamadore, each of them performing a step necessary in
the creation of a new individual. They looked identical to Billy-because their sex
differences were all in the fourth dimension.
> One of the biggest moral bombshells handed to Billy by the Tralfamadorians,
incidentally, had to do with sex on Earth. They said their flying-saucer crews had
identified no fewer than seven sexes on Earth, each essential to reproduction. Again:
Billy couldn't possibly imagine what five of those seven sexes had to do with the making
of a baby, since they were sexually active only in the fourth dimension.
> The Tralfamadorians tried to give Billy clues that would help him imagine sex in the
invisible dimension. They told him that there could be no Earthling babies without male
homosexuals. There could be babies without female homosexuals. There couldn't be
babies without women over sixty-five years old. There could be babies without men over
sixty-five. There couldn't be babies without other babies who had lived an hour or less
after birth. And so on.
> It was gibberish to Billy.

It has nothing to do with Native Americans though, and proooobably nothing to do with trannies. Just Vonnegut being Vonnegut.

No one has ever said that.
The argument is that no one but Europeans industrialised slavery on such a mass scale.

And it is true, no need to get so defensive about something our oligarchs great-great-great-grandparents did way back when

Late Qing dynasty pretty much. China lost all their fights in that period.

It similar to what happened with France.
