Rule number one for conquering China: don't give the steppe people a reason to unite.

They can, have, and will instantly form a continental empire that fucks your shit up.

Asia was way too nice to move overseas. Britain, on the other hand, was just enough of an asshole to do so (and spread their imperialistic infection into Africa as well).

Mainly his succession. Whether political, religious, or otherwise, revolutions that happen because of autocratic fiat invariably end up being challenged on the death of their autocrat, and whether they go on to become a lasting system or ideology depends on how they meet that challenge.

Successful example: Augustus' plans for the succession were disrupted a number of times, but he had prepared a lot of different candidates for the possibility of wielding power. The one who eventually succeeded him, Tiberius, was one of his least favored choices but nevertheless did a good job of managing the Empire up until he became incapable in his old age.

Unsuccessful example: Akhenaten. After his death, there were 2 successions within 4 years, followed by the ascension of Tutankhamen, a boy king, who did not produce an heir before dying. In light of all this, it is hardly surprising that the religious revolution Akhenaten had tried to engineer was undone within ~20 years of his death. Had he created a stronger line of succession, said revolution might have stuck.

> Among all the [subject] alien peoples only the Hui-hui say “we do not eat Mongol food”. [Cinggis Qa’an replied:] “By the aid of heaven we have pacified you; you are our slaves. Yet you do not eat our food or drink. How can this be right?” He thereupon made them eat. “If you slaughter sheep, you will be considered guilty of a crime.” He issued a regulation to that effect ... [In 1279/1280 under Qubilai] all the Muslims say: “if someone else slaughters [the animal] we do not eat”. Because the poor people are upset by this, from now on, Musuluman [Muslim] Huihui and Zhuhu [Jewish] Huihui, no matter who kills [the animal] will eat [it] and must cease slaughtering sheep themselves, and cease the rite of circumcision.

Ghengis Khan himself banned ritual slaughter and circumcision. The Mongols didn't put up with Abrahamic bullshit and told the Huihui [middle-chinese for 'westerner' from the name of an ancient monotheistic Uyghur kingdom].

In China, Muslims, Jews, Christians, Manicheans, Zoroastrians and other monotheistic faiths were known as Huihui, because they all came from the west and had the same message of only one God. The original Huihui were Uyghur Manicheans.

There is nothing wrong with annihilating culturally similar Kingdoms, destroying variations among them, and forging a country out of it.

meh, it mostly went bad for the Han, until the Han mange to form a centralized government and fix the economy.

Big emphasis on 'culturally similar and having the same ancestors'

Qin empire was pretty cool and laid the foundation for the next dynasties.

Was that the guy that sent Xu Fu on his quest to the Mountains of the Immortals to gain immortality, who never returned and most likely just chilled in Japan, helping to form the first Japanese kingdom?
