The U.S. banned Japanese immigration, naturally they started to migrate to what used to be the 2nd option in the new world, which is Brazil.

What I've heard is that after slavery was ended in Brazil in 1889, Brazil needed a new cheap labor force to replace the freed slaves, so they enticed Japanese people to move there.
I've always thought it was because of the huge fishing industries in both countries.
It's funny because the ex-pats brought baseball there and half of the Brazilian national baseball team continues to be Japanese.
