It was more about trading. The Brit Empire was very different to the Ottoman or Roman Empires where you had a centralised authority deciding about what to conquer next.
Most of the formal military action was ad hoc defence of our various multinationals, traders and missionaries when natives and rivals started causing trouble.
India was conquered by the East India company, Much of Africa was conquered by Cecil Rhodes. The US colonies were commercial ventures.
