In the beginning, lenin took everybodys money, planning to take care of his population equally with that money. then atalin came and put everybodys money into the war machine, making everyone poor. Later on. the soviet union stopped being communiat. The government owned every business though, creating a monstrous, corrupt beaurcracy that got more and more tangled up until it collapsed on its on weight.

The Soviet Union adopted centralized economic policies, whereby committees determined output quotas to be met. Naturally, these quotas often did not accurately reflect demand, especially during the 1980s.

The Space Race did not "kill" the Soviet Union. Blind military spending, corruption, and instability during the 1980s killed the Soviet Union. The military thought Reagan was crazy and was seriously going to invade the East. War games like Able Archer and the SDI project fueled their paranoia, so they raised their military spending to unsustainable levels. Corruption was endemic, but fueled by resource shortages at home. The war in Afghanistan was a quagmire, Poland was on the verge of revolution, and East Germany was about to collapse. By 1989, the entire system fell apart, the Wall fell, and countries were leaving the Warsaw Pact left and right. Countries began to break away from the Union itself, like the Baltics and Ukraine and such, and the government was basically in freefall after 1990.

The Space Race had fuck all to do with any of this.

Firms, public and private, were responsible to make rates of profit coordinated through banking interest rates. The profit motive was not abolished by the plan, only increased.

Demand for wage labour intensified with great competition prior to the 1960s (Andrle).

By 1937 a standard consumer economy had replaced worker preference rationing consumer economies.
