Properly led autocracies generally work better than other forms of government for newly industrializing states (bear in mind that Russia was basically a feudal state until Russian Revolution), and that's why socialism appears to initially work.
Autocracies don't do a good job of much after industrialization and some level of material wealth has been achieved, and autocracies without clear lines of succession tend to cause civil wars. They also tend to be perceived by many as illegitimate, which makes unrest likely.
There is another problem as well: violent revolutions intended to empower the peasant class leads to an armed and angry peasant class, who are generally too dumb to realize the ideals of the revolution that they are fighting for (see french revolution, reign of terror, etc.).

In theory, the government takes everything you earn or own, and equally distributes it among the population. So if the economy is bad, everyone is poor, if its good, everyone does good. The government will give you pension when you get old and food when you get hungry. This alls works fine, but the main problem is when people like Stalin get into power. You see, when stalin got into power, after killing many people, he took all the money and resources lenin accumulated, and put it into stuff like the soviet war machine. Thid badically threw away the dream of communism in Russia.
Attempting to run the economy without prices. Whatever you have to say about more or less government involvement in certain things, central planning as a fundamental organising principle is inefficient as heck and runs countries into bankruptcy.
