In much of Northern Europe, bathing was replaced by saunas, because bathing was considered unsanitary by primitive doctors and sinful by the clergy.
In Eastern Europe you still hear old people saying that baths don't really clean you because all the grime and filth is still in the water you're doused in. They also claim taking a bath after eating will kill you.
