What do you need to do to have a successful coup?

Take control of the government

to be supported by the public

OP asked about the real coup, not the "coup" in Turkey which was created to consolidate Erdogan's power.
>>
3 rules:

1) must not be a falseflag

2) do it when people are asleep

3) apprehend the head of state

how is he wrong?

You need the military, or part of it, since they will basically do the dirty work. But you also need the support of some civilian sectors of society. Having the media on your side - or at least a part of it - is essential.
>>
You need to control as many methods of communication as possible, arrest or eliminate high command or the highest ranking government officials, and be as fast as possible.

Kill the monarch so there's no turning back.

He >>1424594 is right. A coup d'etat doesn't need support from civilians at all. In fact, a proper coup will have apprehended all the politicians and taken control of all important government buildings and media in a matter of a few hours without anyone realising what happened. When people wake up in the morning, they will hear that martial law is in effect etc.

This is especially true for Turkey. Civilians are not to be involved in any way or form. Makes you think...

Reason
>>

A coup not supported by some sectors of the civilian society is surely a short lived one.
>>

Civilian resistance after a military coup does not end well, which is why a coup d'etat has a high chance of being successful. Many coups throughout history have been executed with miniscule support from civilians. Hell, this is the reason they do a coup in the first place, because their view of what their country should be is not shared by civilians.
>>
Everybody else about has it, but the Castro's j26 movement was not a coup. It was a guerrilla style civil war. Coups have to be done quickly; they must take control of the governing infrastructure e.g. Major highways, power, communications, government administration; take into custody the former heads of government. The most important part is they must be conducted before the overthrown government has time to react. In Turkey, there should have been a death squad in whatever resort town Erdogan was in and he would have never been able to call for mass protests.

who the fuck brought that up
any coup is not gonna do well if no one supports it but top-ranking military officials
>>
>>1424540
apprehend the leader(s)
control the media
have popular support from the people
have a better armed force than the current regime when you strike
get a foreign power to recognize your regime as legitimate
>>
I AM THE HEAD OF STATE
LET ME EAT THOSE TREATIES
>>
1. Control the media.
2.Control all airports and boarders
3. Arrest the most important figures of state the quickest possible.
4. If you need to kill your fellow contry men, don't hesitate.
