No, needs of the self just need to be balanced out by needs of others. We also need to start realizing that the idea that people act solely by rational self interest, which is currently pushed heavily by our political and economic elites, is at best incomplete and at worst completely wrong

Lack of ego is a mental plague. Ego is motivation for almost everything that we do. Pride is the foundation of all noble conduct. Anyone who holds himself to a higher standard, he does so because of his self-regard. Tiny, weak, small men deny the ego because it can lead to anti-social behavior and conflict, ignoring that it is also the direct creator of nearly everything good man has ever done.
