Russian here. Back then medals were like salery. You were payed in them kinda ideology thing honor above loney. We had medals for anything. From saving drowning man to having a lot of children.Ironicly after the fall many veterans sold thier medals not to starve.

Soviets created lots of ethnic identities out of thin air and codified and rooted some that were already there instead of Russifying everyone which lead to disunity and the eventual breakup.
