So I was recommended to read Adam Tooze`s The Deluge about the First World War.
Basically, the case that author makes in it is that
-decline of Europe began then, not after 1945

The argument author makes that while weakened, Christianity was severely undermined in all domains (politics,arts,social life etc). because all churches in the continent supported it.

Christianity lost its hold on the population after the Christian empires of the world sent millions of their own men to die with the backing of the church (Got mitt uns, etc. etc.) and other establishments which is what gave rise to cynicism, secularism and the decline of the church. Essentially; the end of European world and the transfer of power to America, finalised by WW2.
That's the argument of the book.

I don't know about Protestants because they're decentralised, but the Vatican was against WWI. Secularism started before it, but yeah, the war and its horrors certainly helped cement that.
