A suprizing number of people in the past had high-pitched voices. Lincoln, George Patton, and others of whom we have accounts. I suspect its because of the lack of amplification: you had to talk louder to make yourself heard in large halls or outdoors. Doing so made the pitch of your voice go up. Theodore Roosevelt was another example.
