I think the whole having four wives thing is just a metaphor. The rule that allows you to have four wives stipulates that you have to treat them equally and love them equally. Even giving one wife an extra grain of rice more than the others is not allowed. However you cannot love 4 people equally so therefore just like the old jesus quote "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" this must just be a metaphor for you cant have 4 wives.
