There seems to have been a lot of cells resisting Nazi occupation during WWII; which ones were the most notable or successful?
What about in other wars and time periods? Do we know of successful or effective partisan-type groups from before the modern age, for instance?

Well it's not a German resistance that's for sure.
The actual bolshevist jews had ballin style iirc. Theres that one that was getting executed, he almost looked like a musketeer. The nazis made the waffen ss to try and step up their style.
Honestly if the wehrmacht had yellow/black capes representing the German eagle they would be eldar god tier in terms of style.
The PLA is probably the most successful partisan movement, being that they successfully seized control of the world's largest country.
For WW2, the Polish resistance were the shit.
Wasn't the French resistance pretty effective with help from the SOE?

This isn't 100% what you're looking for, but the Battle of Algiers is a pretty good movie about the conflict in Algeria.
It blew my mind to find out that essentially every scene in the movie was historically accurate.

Fought a war on 4 fronts ( axis, allies,greek collaborators, his own fucking communist party)
He kicked ass and only lost due to politics. Really tragic figure, ended up killing himself in the mountains.
His greatest success was reviving the klepht movement, he found criminal fugitives that hid from the authorities, told them this was their chance to be heroes and redeem themselves for the petty crimes they were accused of.
Yugoslav partisans pretty much liberated entire country by themselves if you don't count Soviets helping them out in the battle for Belgrade.

Ukrainian Insurgent Army was extremely well organized, especially for an entity acting with zero support from anyone and fighting almost everyone. Then that zero support bit them in the ass, of course.

after the greek civil war was lost, they bullied greek partisans (we liberated our country, what did you do?). It was more in the lined of banter.
We kinda deserved it, Tito offered help but the greek communist party obeyed stalinist propaganda instead.
