I actually really dig this painting anon, historical or not, the subject is historical, and it's well made. I know the artist was likely assisted with modern tools like photoshop, but I like to think of that as an entirely different skillset. I've see talented on-paper artists flounder like toddlers the second they're handed a mouse or a tablet. I think traditional and modern tools should be in the artist's skillset.
More mythological than historical but fuck me if this isn't awesome.

He's referring to the board's 25 year rule. It's a decent rule, most of the time. I think he's being anal about modern photoshop art. I say as long as it depicts something historical it's A-OK.
Also how is Rembrandt not historical material? Am I misunderstanding what you mean?

The black warriors of the Caliph's bodyguard supposedly chained themselves to prove they would never retreat. The legend tells the chain in the coat of arms of Navarre is the very same chain of those black elite warriors (probably false though).

Anyone have that painting of a naval battle from the Great Northern War in which a ship is in the background and Peter the Great is in the foreground lighting a beacon or something? If I remember correctly it was the first battle the Russians fought with ships of the line rather than a shitload of galleys so I think it was the Battle of Osel Island but I can't seem to find the image.
