What exactly did the Roman senate do if all the power essentially rested with the emperor?
What does the U.S. senate do if all the power belongs to the lobbyists?

I'm really not sure that imperial Rome had checks and balances

They did have some power, since they managed to depose Nero and make him an enemy of the state.

under augustus, the two were equal, although *technically* augustus could do whatever the fuck he wanted.
later, as their powers eroded, the roman senate became more like a nobility, with people giving their positions to their sons and basically buying their way into 'power'. They were more or less advisors to the emperor, who made final decisions.
come now, you didn't think an ancient empire could REALLY have elected officials, representing different areas? Senator was an honorific term, almost.

are you a troll, or just retarded? no power belongs to lobbyists. yes, senators get a fuck ton of money from lobbies, but when it comes to big issues like guns the senators will just vote according to party.

The Emperor could not be present everywhere at once. Therefore some power was delegated to the Senate. Senators were essentially an administrative elite that served the Imperial family. They administered provinces and served as officers in the military. They continued to hold the old republican offices and carry out their duties. However the highest offices such as the Consulship were reserved for the Emperor, his heirs, and his court favorites. As were the highest military commands and the most prestigious governorships.

...help govern the empire?
There's no such thing as a singular ruling Monarch. Even the Medieval ages cunts have a huge council supporting them. Eurocentric views of "Eastern Despotism" collapse once you read of China's Imperial ministries or Iranic Circles of Justice.

They elected Nerva as Emperor
