Some of the stuff that he did was pretty cool. He lead soldiers all the way from Argentina to Rome and the alps. He has a interesting story and is probably a guy I would fight under if I was a Italian during that time. I don't know what effects he had on southern Italy though.

Lincoln offered him a position in the Union army early in the Civil War. Garibaldi declined because he wanted to be the overall commander of the army (the offer was for Major General) and Lincoln to declare the aim of the war was the abolition of slavery (a position Lincoln wasn't willing to take at the time). He did congratulate and praise Lincoln once the Emancipation Proclamation was issued though.
