That's a bad choice to be honest mate. Any retard on tumblr can be a 'journalist' nowadays and the industries response was to sink to gutter level instead of trting to elevate the product. What made you go in that direction?

Sociology, with a minor in Philosophy.

Panicked and tacked on a second minor in Business Marketing before graduation - pivoted off of the statistics work from my Sociology coursework and am now working in Marketing Research for a Fortune 10 company.

So, everything went better than expected, but deep down, as sophomoric as it sounds, I still feel like a sell out and hope to be doing research for a think tank or policy research institution in the future.

Anon please be okay. I read somewhere suicide doesn't get rid of the pain it just puts it on another person (think of your family). I don't know about your philosophical beliefs but if you believe in just about any kind of higher power (anything from Pantheism to Monotheism) it is also generally believed that any life isn't yours to take.

Read some philosophy. Epictetus's stuff always makes me feel comfy and he was a slave at one point so he know hardship.

I posted this in the other college thread but this one seems more active so I'll repost it.

Going to double major in Econ and Mechanical Engineering or pick one (I haven't decided yet and I'm still a Freshman). A good reason is that life is better when lessons are learned, not surrendered to. If you learn from mistakes and unfortunate circumstances rather than being defeated, you'll be fine. This will not solve your problems in the slightest. You need to stick with your degree to get that piece of paper. However at the same time you need to go on YouTube and learn how to do SQL, it's easy af and you can get a job out of college for 45-50k easily knowing SQL

I've just never really found anything that I've wanted to commit myself to for more than a few years, even completing college was a struggle. Current UN's Outer Space Treaty states that a country cannot lay claim to an extraterrestrial body or area of land, but individuals are not included under this restriction.

Then again, I fully expect that treaty to be flaunted and mostly ignored within the next 50 years, and for new laws to crop up in their place. I'd like to help shape those laws.

The US actually laid some groundwork recently, passing legislation to the effect that any asteroid material secured by persons or corporations is thereby considered their own property to keep and sell.

suicide is just as useless and pointless as life is, so there's really no point in it. You cannot really be sure what happens after death, so theres a chance it even gets worse from that point onwards. Youll atleast have a couple of more happy moments in your life and its "worth" living for those.
>>
>>1286815
also, if youre the same guy that said he studies journalism, I'm in the same boat as you are anon
>>
>>1286815
That's how I view it. But to build with a personal anecdote: Life is frustrating to me because I have brain problems, but anything short of my best in a meaningless world may as well be equivalent to this suicide.

A day where nothing is done, is a day that is given wholly to death. These days are the currency I pay for my idleness.
>>
>>1286829
and yet in that case your suicide should stand as your ultimate resignation. Suicide is surely not "your best", what ever that means. keep working on yourself, if you strive for better like you say you do, start lifting/hitting the books hard, any way to build yourself up as a persona will bring good things. if you ever considered joining a gym i think you should, it will bring good for your mental health, atleast it did for me

my exams start next week and I ALSO have a seminar paper due till thursday which I havent started yet and havent even decided on the topic. Yeah its dead as fuck, but honestly, working in a good paper still appeals to me. Even if I got a chance to write for a tabloid press I'd think I'd get a kick out of it. I do not care about social media crap since I'm in a shithole of a country where the newspapers are still somewhat read, and nobody takes facebook seriously, nobody even uses twitter here.
Also I have to disagree on the > anything but desinform, I undarastand the point youre trying to make, but you have to admit they did some decent work as well. Yes the media is 100% controlled but some stories are not of big head interest and can still be written and worked through decently. There is no real truth anyways, so why not just jump in the big bandwagon and have some fun while creating it. I wish it looked like in the old days, everybody smoking cigs and drinking liquor with a proper dress code and all. Nowadays its just kinda "eh"? I guess. Everybody keeps saying that newspapapers are going out but I doubt it will happen in my or your life time, the feel of the paper under your fingers and the smell of that shit when you buy it of a kiosk is just too good.

I started running. I've basically been on and off depressed since I was 5, but it actually really helped. I went from barely meeting a half a mile on good days, to five times that much. That's inspiring. But it isn't enough. You can't outrun depression. But it's a start.

So that the ultimate resignation is just how I feel about it. I know that If I dont' try my best, I've resigned myself to it. And I have. Being depressed means hating yourself, feeling like a wicked little bastard who's good for nothing. But why? Who told you other than you? Because when you resign yourself to that, you tell yourself "yes, I am a victim of my existential horror and doubt."

but if you can tell yourself that; if you have the power to paint this narrative of a victim and have it control your life, you have the power to do the opposite. Because both of these are contrived narratives that you come up with. Tell yourself "I'm going to be alright, no matter what I feel, no matter what or who happens". Because you get to. You can be arbitrary. Nobody takes that from you, because it's you took ownership of it yourself. Tell yourself "I have agency, I choose." And when you fall short, then you can tell yourself "I chose this, but it doesn't have to be that way."

It's being arbitrary to yourself, in a rational, self interested way. Nobody's gonna give you a pillar to lean on. Be your own. Use logical continuity like this to create internal tension that holds itself upright through its own rules. This doesn't save me from discomfort, depression, and sadness. But I prepare myself for these things in this way; I am trying to force myself to be comfortable with discomfort.

I hope this helps.

Read Herman Hesse's Steppenwolf. I only realize now that over the past few months, my stance has been really shaped by the book. It has a lot to say about how "suicide as a final resignation" Is empowering, because it too is an option at your disposal. Just your last one.

I'll go on to say that if you're depressed, it's in part an issue with perspective. Introducing yourself to new ideas can really help.

You'd be surprised.

Studing in a recognized university helps immensely. Studios need junior level designers and UI guys.

Historically, though, most designers do take technical degrees or work QA for years. A rare few artists do become designers too.

I suppose what makes it so amazing is that we know so little about it. The sheer volume of information available for, say, the social history of Britain in the 1980s means that very little is left to the interpretative historian. The rise of quantitative methodology in these fields means that it is, to a large extent, possible to reduce the study of these periods to a science.

In early medieval history, that's simply not possible. I love that I am forced to make judgement calls based on the evidence that I have, which can be extremely scanty. I may be wildly wrong, but it makes for the lively, rigourous debate that makes the historiography so interesting.

>>
>>1278509
>What are you studying, /his/?
I've got a master's degree in finance, now I'm doing my time to qualify for certifications.
>Are you satisfied with your choice?
I suppose. I enjoy economics as a field of study, and my job pays really well (tho I make more out of performance bonusesthan actual salary). I don't enjoy the job itself or the frequent overtime, but then I don't think I'd *enjoy* any job anyway. In the end, it allowed me to live comfortably and start a family in my 20s, so I'm not complaining.
At times I wonder how would my life had gone had I studied history, but it's an idle thought. I'm well aware I don't have the passion nor the skills to live off shit salaries and constant workplace changes until (if) I manage to land a professor's job. Not to mention it would have destroyed my family before it even started.
>>
>>1293943
Not him, but international relations is a field of study that first came up in the 1920s. There are different schools that offer different theories for the analysis of the interaction between states. I'd say the most influential ones are realism (muh balance of power), liberalism (muh ideals) and marxism (muh oppression).
The objectively best school is English realism because it places more emphasis on historical analysis instead of theories, IR in the US are more influenced by PolSci.

Sociology in my place is not really worthless, since it offers a few modules that actually have a good bit of utility to them. For example, it allows for specializing in socio-economics, or shifting to fields involved with psychiatry. We have a system that is a bit more fluid in these matters, it's pretty neat.
