Anybody else find the Cold War to be a very romantic conflict?

Two empires with differing but equally sincere visions of liberation and democracy tried to bring freedom to the world. Unlike WW2, there was no clear hero, as both sides could a lot from the other.

It really is a twentieth century Trojan War.

That's kind of a weird way to see it

>America
>Sincerely bringing freedom and democracy to the world.
>>
>equally sincere

The Soviets were the villains with their ideals infecting the West and slowly destroying it like a cancer. The problems of today a result of the Soviet cells in the West and their blossoming. Their ideals were wholly based on Judeo-Marxism and the old Russian Empire. Stalin killed millions of people and his successors did the same.
>>
>equally sincere
Well... I guess that might actually be accurate, but insincere would have been a better choice of word.

Communism is now synonymous with liberation now? Lol
>>
>>1262790
It was 100 years ago too.

It's just been hijacked by liberals like Rothbard.
>>
>>1262785
The hero didn't win in Troy either. Fuck greeks.
>>
>>1262727
>Unlike ww2 there was no clear hero

I mean I guess, but it's not like the Americans were that much worse than the germans.

You do realize people can genuinely hold left wing views without being indoctrinated by some secret Soviet cabal, right?
>>
>>1262755
I think the Americans lawmakers generally WERE sincere. Since Woodrow Wilson, the US has followed a policy of democracy promotion that was oftentimes more ideological than pragmatic.

While corporate interests obviously played an enormous role in the Cold War, I think it's naive to believe that every capitalist politician was deliberately exploitative. Much like Stalin, nearly all the horrible things done by the US really came from a place of sympathy and humanism. Dogmatic Western politicians believed that anything but liberal democracy was tyranny, and were willing to fight this perceived tyranny at any cost.

This is kinda beautiful, OP's point is perfectly illustrated by two posts made at the same time

Just because hold harmful beliefs doesn't mean they're harmful

I really don't think Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy were all colluding to promote oppression. We should recognize that most Western imperialists did sincerely care about liberty.

>>1262846
True, but modern left wing views are from the Soviets and their allies.

He's also correct.

That seems a little bit of a silly claim.

They weren't.

The US supported some absolutely fucked up regimes in the name of stopping communism and "democracy". The horrible things done by the US came from a place of greed and pragmatism.

There was nothing sympathetic or humanist about it, they just wanted to get paid by their corporate masters.

How can anyone support anarchocapitalism?
True liberalism is capitalism with a medium size welfare state.

This. As a swede I can confirm this to be true, our biggest newspaper and alot of famous writers were soviet agents, wasnt long time ago some writers said it was true.
Those people are known as the 69 movement or sumthing, bunch of hippies taxing people to death and giving it to their hippie artisan friend so they can make bullshit art and work while not working, tolerance and solidarity and all that bullshit.

Well... It certainly was better than modern war against ISIS and feminism and apparently Putin?
>>

I actually found that sad.

The Cold War should never have ended. Back then, we had socialism to counterbalance Neoliberalism, with cool music and sick hats.

What do we have now? North Korea and fucking ISIS

Not even a gommunist but I agree

the fall of the USSR was a tragedy for the west.
>>
>>1263395
The '68ers weren't really Communist.

From the '50s onwards (once word got out about Stalin's atrocities and life in the USSR in general) most of the Left shifted away from supporting the USSR to supporting Third World revolutionary/post-colonial regimes instead (i.e. Cuba, North Vietnam, Algeria etc).

Of course they never seemed to question where exactly these Third Worlder Marxists were getting their financial/material support from

Frenchies fucked your country, mate. Burgers only went in and did what they do best: liberation by incineration.
And it was kind of romantic, even for you all.
>>
>>1262727
It was a conflict of interest that divided a country and then a world all while the threat of a nuclear end to Earth was always present. Are ideologies or economic systems really worth all that?
>>
>>1264218
There's always the person who didn't think it through and just expects everyone to get along because of some reason, though that happens for every economic system.
>>
>>1262967
>modern left wing views are from the Soviets and their allies.
The majority of modern left wing views demonstrate a coup for capitalism.

Left wing parties often fundamentally accept capitalist economics and turn to focus on social issues because they have no serious economic power.

Large bodies of left-wing student types believe our economic system is fundamentally fair, except for that women and minorities don't get fair chances to join the ruling classes.

The modern left owes more to Adam Smith than to Karl Marx.

More romantic than the current "you must give up all of your privacy in case some muslim tries to blow up a bus full of old people"
