Forgot to add, it's due to the ritual forming out of operative stonemason guilds, where they would perform Christian morality plays at festivals (all guilds would. They were assigned them by the churches). This was combined with the religious devotions of science (not just monasteries) and building, so they evolved into the ceremonies we have today. Or rather, we did before 1813, where a lot of Christianity was toned down from them thanks to the Duke of Sussex who was a Gnostic.
