The fact that Russia, France, and Austria had not yet torn Prussia a new one by this time is a testament to his greatness.

Every "great" leader in history earns their reputation through 90% luck and 10% through their own ability, Frederick was no different. Caesar could've been completely destroyed on more than one occasion if things had just gone even slightly different.

Kunersdorf was way too late to say that Prussia had gotten its ass kicked. The war should have and would have ended with a total allied victory years before had it been any other king.

more like 75% luck and 25% post hoc memes. when shit is actually going down nobody understands what's happening, it is only afterward that a narrative is pieced together. tolstoy discusses at length in war and peace that this is the way of war, but it applies to politics as aptly.

winston churchill for instance was an incompetent hack fraud but despite an entire career of blunders, alcoholism, and failure he was aggressive and gave a few blustery speeches and let his military machine execute its plan without too much interference (if any good can be said about him it's that he learned a lesson from gallipoli) for five years, and now he's remembered as one of britain's greatest leaders.

the actually talented, industrious people 95% of the time are forgotten about in the historical narrative that is constructed. and they're not some oppressed underclass like slaves, they're just not as interesting as the meme-people.
