Why was Rudolf Hess jailed for over 56 years?
What crimes did he commit for him not be released? All i know is that he tried to negotiate peace in Scotland and was thrown in jail.

He also hung himself at the age of 93. His doctor claimed he was to frail to do it himself, and it was British intelligence that murdered him. All part of their elaborate plot to jail him for five decades, THEN murder him I'm sure. Such a bizarre life and story though.

It's not known for sure why he came to Britain. 'Make peace' if you believe him - more likely there were nazi sympathisers he was hoping to meet to conspire with to end the war, there were quite a few candidates even in the royal family like Edward VIII. He was packed off to the Bahamas for WW2 for good reason.
Hess was never released because the soviets wouldn't allow it, as long as Hess was in Spandau prison it meant they had a foothold in West Berlin, as all powers took turns guarding and running the prison.
Hess hanged himself in his 90s, he was old and frail and alone, everyone else had been released or died many years prior. He was also at least a bit crazy, his mental heath had been questionable for decades. But it's doubted by some whether he could have hanged himself. But saying he was murdered because the collapse of the USSR leading to his release doesn't make much sense. What could he have known for nearly 50 years that suddenly was too risky to have him freed?
