Why didn't the Brits try colonize China?

A huge country with most of the country united under one rule, unlike India, which was a bunch of city states and small empires. The British might have come out on top but it would take all their might. They did beat China in wars and got Hong Kong.
They were, slowly, along with the rest of Europe.
Qing and Civil War era China, basically had no control over their major coastal cities and even Beijing.

???
They did?
They literally had several colonies in China. It's not like they could immediately take control over the entire country, and they were competing with several other powers as well.

The truth is the British came into india right as the Mughals started to decline, it wasn't an immediate takeover either more like creeping common law.
India was closer, colonized first, and had less European competition.

Though the Spastic imperial latecomers like Japan and Germany wanted to turn the place into an India.

Because Britain thought it more profitable to carve out a small zone (Hong Kong and concessions in Shanghai/Tianjin) and sell manufactured goods to China. France, Russia, and the newly united German Empire also had plans for China and would probably be hostile if Britain wanted to take over by force. It would affect the balance of power back in Europe.
