Islamic golden age. Was it a myth?
>>
as in it didn't happen? or it wasn't really a 'golden age'?
>>
It was okay I guess
>>
>>1216614
like was it really a golden age due to islam itself. weren't most scientists persian?
>>
>>1216609
It was a golden age FOR Islam.

With that being said, the caliphates of the time triumphed Europe in science, philosophy, military, economy, etc.

There was indeed a point in history where the islamic middle eastern civilization was better than in the previous and subsequent eras of the same civilization. By the way, no, the islamic golden age has nothing to do with the rashidun caliphs and the initial conquests.

That's what the islamic golden age is and of course it existed. Don't let memesters in any of the two sides tell you otherwise.

The "islamic" part in it doesn't mean that. It's the golden age of islam.

Most "golden ages" in history are like that, you're reading it wrong if you believe that a civilization is superior because it had a golden age at some point.

No.

People trying to separate Islam from the achievements during the period we call the IGA because of their modern viewpoints biasing their view of the past. Usually they say things like 'but it was Persians!' when Persians can be Muslims as well as anyone else can. Usually these people conflate religion and ethnicity. Some of these types of people usually have a hard time with the fact that advancements made upon the works of others are still advancements and start accusing IGA people of 'stealing' Greek and Roman knowledge and passing it off as their own.

The name doesn't imply it was only Muslims that did things during the time or that things were achieved because of Islam. It was just the time during which the region under control of Islamic governments was more advanced in certain fields than other regions of the world.

It's islamic because had islam not existed arabs would have had stayed in the desert as they were achieving nothing of significance and because islam played a major role on how the islamic countries operated and that most of it's contributing figures were muslims

>weren't most scientists persian

most people in the caliphates were not muslim. only the upper classes of society were.

what mattered is that they brought relative peace and stability to a region that had grecoroman knowledge and on the trade routes to get hindu and chinese knowledge.

So scholarly types had the time and access to study and add to other peoples' works.

>>live in decadence until the mongols fuck your shit up

this minorities did everything thing is a complete meme. Yes, Jews (and Christians for that matter) produced a lot of what came out of the Islamic world.

The upper classes were not always Arab though. This maybe true for Andalusia in the early stages of the conquest, but Muslim Berbers started becoming more important later on.

Same with Egypt. Once the Fatimids took over, Arabs did not play much of a role, because the territory did not have a significant Arab population.

The same applies for the empires that were established in Baghdad, Aleppo, and Damascus. Not a whole lot of Arabs, but the empire flourished so the people that lived there produced a lot.

It is very important to realize that Arab migration is overemphasized because it really did not happen on that large of a scale and mostly stayed on the fringes. And that Islam is not an ethnicity but a religion. So, when Muslim Persians like Ibn Sina or Muslim Andalusians like Ibn Rushd did something notable it was attributed to the Empires in which they lived which happened to be Islamic, not Arab, in nature.
