why do some of the tiles fade over time, like the top right corner in the OP? exposure to the elements?

The tiles aren't faded, they're not there at all. Damage to the mosaic.

That's just damage over time. Those tiles have fallen off. Nowadays with varnished tile you don't need to worry about fading. If you make a mosaic it should last a very long time in proper conditions.

something eerie about this picture. i think its the fact that images of women in a secular setting in what looks like basically two piece bathing suits would not appear in western art like this until our own times. I wonder how many images the romans had like this that christfags destroyed (on the assumption that this wasn't some anomalous picture for a rich guy).

I found most of these mosaics through art history and archaeology blogs then googled higher res pics of them.

I saw this in Ravenna. It was completely free, and breathtaking. Yet it's one of the smaller mosaics there.
Ravenna truly is an unsung gem of a place. 8 UNESCO world heritage sites, and you could see them in a day.

Is that from Geneva ? I think I saw it, under the cathedral.
The big hole was made by workers, a long time ago (1900 ?) who put a pipe through the mosaic. By the time, it was still under the earth.
