Actually, you can. The mainstream Republicans objected to slavery not because they considered black slaves as equal human beings but because they feared that the expansion of slavery into western territories would undermine their ability to have farms and industries worked by free labor in that part of the continent. Moral issues had little to do with their concern regarding the expansion of the institution of slavery, they were concerned about the effect it would have on their status as free white men.
