He was just a schmoozer who manipulated stupid people. In his own time his cult was always on the run, hounded constantly by police and angry townsfolk because he made so many enemies from his various scams. He died in a gunfight outside of a prison.

Mormonism has been successful, surely. But almost completely despite Joseph Smith as a person. Who is one of the most embarrassingly easy prophets to 'debunk'.
